A wet and windy Swansea on May 13th 2002 saw people from all over Ireland and
the UK gather to discuss the effective implementation of gender mainstreaming in the
European Structural Funds.
This event was unusual for two reasons:

First it drew in not just gender mainstreaming practitioners from European Programmes, but many of the programme managers and leaders too.

Second, it dealt not just with human resources, but looked at gender issues across ALL European programmes and all aspects of them such as: spatial issues; transport; finance and budgeting. Circulating the reports, papers and speeches from the conference the main content of this document is not simply a matter of accurate record keeping. It is an important part of one of the key recommendations of sharing information and facilitating networking.

To produce a clear set of recommendations for actors at the relevant levels programme/regional/national/European.

To identify the barriers to successful implementation and discuss practical ways to overcome them.

To facilitate networking by consolidating existing networks and developing new ones.
