Dialogue starts between CENTURi21 and UKonline

Colin Millar

The latest UK Government Initiative, called UKonline, aims to create a National Government public-service portal for information and transactions for every UK citizen. This concerns central government departments and agencies, and is therefore compatible with the Centuri21 objectives for local and regional government.

It is therefore necessary to enter into an early dialogue to ensure that the respective roll-outs are working towards common goals. The UKonline approach is, like CENTURi21, based on themed life-events such as "moving home", "going away", "having a baby" or "being a victim of crime".

Fortunately, BT and Oracle are participants in aspects of UKonline, allowing an early understanding of the harmonisation needs. Colin Millar of CENTURi21, has started a dialogue with BT’s John Stevens of UKonline, to position CENTURi21 as the local authority component of UKonline. John will be invited to the next UK Regional Steering Group meeting in October, and we plan to make CENTURi21 representations to UKonline soon after.
It is essential to provide the continuity of a thematic approach across national and local boundaries of responsibility, and the success of the ongoing dialogue will be a good test of the principle of "joined-up-ness" in service provision.
